Although unconventional, The First Unitarian Church basement is the busiest Philly venue. Showcasing an incredible variety of music, from indie to mainstream, from local to international, you can always count on First Unitarian for an intimate and incredible concert experience.
About the Church - On June 12, 1796, twenty of Philadelphia's intellectual leaders formed the First Unitarian Society of Philadelphia. We were the first church in the country to proclaim itself "Unitarian". We officially became a Welcoming Congregation in April, 2006. On the first Sunday of every month we welcome visitors to an orientation to Unitarian Universalism - a living tradition built on dismantling oppressive systems. We will explore how our faith community has worked for justice for hundreds of years, from advocating for free speech and the free practice of religion as far back as the fifteen hundreds to helping to abolish slavery and ordaining women as early as the the eighteen hundreds. We will discuss how we currently work for justice today, from protecting our environment to standing up for bisexual, gay, lesbian, and transgender people.
